Portrait of a Seal-limbed Woman (probably Sadie Slitz)
Pen and ink, 8 x 6 inches, 2006
This drawing came about through one of those weird happenstance moments: I had just seen a
bunch of photos of a certain buxom seal-limbed woman who may or may not have been Sadie Slitz
(great name), and then almost immediately afterward picked up a book of Peter Paul Rubens
paintings and there was Portrait of a Woman, Probably Susanna Lunden.
The hand gestures in the painting and one of the photographs were weirdly similar, and better
yet was the title — we're not entirely sure if the subject of the painting is Susanna Lunden, nor was I
entirely sure that the women in the photo was Sadie Slitz. Kismet!
There was nothing else for me to do but to create the drawing, as mysterious forces were conspiring to make it so.
